Greetings friends: Summer is almost upon us! Spring flew by for me. We have been busy preparing for growing season. Yesterday we harvested our first offerings of our salad mix and radishes. It looks like we’ll have another bountiful year in the market garden! Spring is always the season of starvation, when the foods harvested from the previous summer run out and spring growth is slow to yield anything substantial. I am often reflecting on how my family might survive if we had to live off the land alone, and spring would certainly be a challenge. This spring we enjoyed nettles and potato soup and I was able to collect and blanch several bags to freeze for future soups. Spring also gave us some delicious kale and collard raab – I am so greatful that my husband didn’t pull up all our collard and kale stalks! We enjoyed several salads made with raab only. Another early riser in the garden is the herb collection. It was refreshing to have fresh herbs to add into things, starting with chives…which leads me to eggs! One night my daughter collected 96 eggs from our hens! They really went through a spring boost this year. I stored away many eggs for our family by making and freezing quiches using fresh herbs and green garlic from the garden.

But now back to summer. The Duvall Farmer’s Market has started up and we’re there each week at Taylor Landing park in Duvall, Thursdays 3-7PM. The Carnation Farmer’s Market starts up at the beginning of June on Tuesdays, 3-7PM. This year the Carnation Farmer’s Market will be located at the Big Red Barn at Tolt McDonald park! We’re very excited to be at this location and hope to see you there each week. Next, our Hollyhock Farm Shop is open each weekend, Saturday and Sunday, 9-5PM.
