Hello from Hollyhock Farm!
It has, as normal, been a busy summer on the farm. Here are some updates:
– The Carnation Farmer’s Market was a success again this year. We love the new location at the Tolt McDonald park red barn, and we were able to have perfect attendance this year! I am sharing a picture in this post of the mug awarded for perfect attendance.
-The Duvall Farmer’s Market continues until the second Thursday of October! Carrots, beets, collads, chard, and kale, tomatoes, potatoes, onions (red and yellow), and garlic (selling fast!) are available in abundance, and of course our fantastic fresh salad mix!
-Eggs are available but very limited! We typically sell out before lunch at our weekend on-site farm shop!
-Turkeys! We had just a few turkeys this year, so we only have ten available. They were processed last weekend. Now that they are in the freezer, we are taking deposits! Deposits are $50. If you would like to reserve a turkey please text Jen at 505-410-9636. Sizes are 13-24lbs this year. Gobble gobble!
-Country Chicken (stew hens) – We will do our annual cull of our laying hens at the end of October/beginning of November. This the the only kind of chicken our family eats now, and we like it so much that we don’t bother with grocery store chickens anymore. To prepare a stew hen, one needs to be prepared to cook the bird at a low temperature for many hours (low and slow!). My preferred method is to rub the whole bird down with salt and pepper and put it dry (no added liquid) into a crockpot on low for 8 hours. I then remove all the bones and serve the meat and shred for tacos or add to casseroles. It’s that easy! Our country chicken will be available starting in November in our farm shop, $20/each.
